Most Mumbai businesses pick a web development company on price and a portfolio, then find out six weeks in that the two things they cared about were never in scope. The portfolio was real. The price was real. The site still does not do what they needed it to do.
This is a guide to the questions that prevent that, written for owners who are commissioning a site rather than building one.
Decide what the site has to do before you brief anyone
A brochure site, a lead-generation site and an ecommerce site are three different projects with three different budgets. If you cannot say which one you want, every quote you receive will be a guess, and you will end up comparing quotes that describe different work.
Write down the one action you want a visitor to take. Call, fill a form, book, buy. A site with one clear action outperforms a site that offers five.
Ask who writes the code
Agencies in Mumbai subcontract, which is not automatically a problem. It becomes a problem when nobody tells you, because the person answering your questions in month three is not the person who built the thing.
Ask directly whether the work is done in-house or passed on. Ask who you speak to when something breaks at 9pm before a sale.
Get the scope in writing before you get the quote
A quote without a scope is a number attached to nothing. The scope should name the number of pages, who writes the copy, who supplies photographs, how many rounds of revisions are included, and what happens when you want a seventh round.
Copy is the item that derails most projects. Someone has to write it. If the agency assumes you will and you assume they will, the project stops for a month while everyone waits.
Make sure you own everything when it ends
This is the question owners forget, and the one that costs most later. Before you pay a deposit, establish in writing:
- The domain is registered in your business name, not the agency’s.
- You have the hosting login, or the hosting is in your account.
- You get the WordPress admin account, not an editor account.
- The code and design files are yours when the engagement ends.
An agency that hesitates on any of these is telling you something useful. A site you cannot move is a site you will pay to rebuild.
Timelines slip for reasons you can predict
Almost every delay traces back to content, approvals or scope changes rather than development. The build is usually the fastest part.
If a timeline assumes you will approve designs in two days and supply all copy in week one, it is a best case, not a plan. Ask what the schedule looks like if approvals take a week, because they will.
Questions worth asking in the first meeting
- What happens to my site if we stop working together?
- Who writes the copy, and is that in the price?
- How is the site built — WordPress, custom, a page builder — and why that choice for my business?
- What does it cost to change something myself after launch?
- Will the site be built to load quickly on a mid-range Android phone?
That last one matters more in India than most agencies admit. A large share of your visitors will arrive on a mid-range phone over a patchy connection. A design that only looks good on a MacBook is a design that loses customers.
Search visibility is part of the build, not a later phase
Retrofitting search performance onto a finished site costs more than building it in. Page structure, headings, internal links and load speed are decisions made during development. If the agency treats search engine optimisation as a separate product sold afterwards, ask why the site is not being built correctly the first time.
What this looks like across Mumbai
The pattern holds whether the business is a salon in Bandra, a trading firm in Fort or a manufacturer in Thane. The brief changes. The questions do not.
South Mumbai businesses tend to need credibility and a clear route to contact. Suburban retail and service businesses usually need local search visibility more than they need a large site. A trading or export firm needs the site to survive scrutiny from a buyer who has never met them.
If you are comparing an agency against hiring independently, the trade-offs are set out in our comparison of agencies and freelance developers.
Before you sign
Ask for one reference you can call, ideally a client whose site launched over a year ago. Recent clients are still pleased. Clients a year on will tell you what support looks like once the invoice is paid.
